Hikkaduwa beach is situated 98km from Colombo towards the south of Sri Lanka. It was the first (1960s) of Sri Lanka’s beautiful beaches to be explored by tourists. The coral sanctuary found on the coast of Hikkaduwa is a large body of shallow water surrounded by a reef, decorated with layers of multi-coloured corals which are home to numerous species of tropical fish. It is considered to be the best coral sanctuary found in Asia. Gampara is the local type of coral found here. Off the beach, large turtles and different kinds of tropical fish are found in a collection of tine islets surrounded by beautiful formations of coral. Glass bottom boats offer superb views of coral reefs just offshore. Wonderful corals and tropical fishes are the top priorities being the only marine life sanctuary in Sri Lanka.
Surfing in Hikkaduwa
It is the best surfing spot in Sri Lanka, with a clear warm water base. After a short distance southwards from the center of the reef, it diminishes giving rise to a wider sandy bottomed beach with good waves ideal for board surfs and body surfing. The wave sizes range from four to eleven feet. It gets the best surf during its dry season, November to March. There are four main breaks from north to south. You can always rent the necessary equipment needed for snorkeling and surfing. Surf spots in Hikkaduwa – North jetty coral bottom, Benny’s coral bottom, main reef, inside reef and beach break.
Hikkaduwa beach festival is organized every year. The festival is extremely popular and attracts thousands of locals and foreign nationals. It is usually a five day event held between July/August. With its impressive coral reefs and abundance of tropical fish, Hikkaduwa beach is considered as one of the best places for snorkeling and diving on the Southwest coast (in the season of November to April). Diving spots in Hikkaduwa include the black coral point, coral garden cave, godagala, hikkapdwa gala, kapawaragala, kirala gala and many others.
